Biography

Maurice Grant is a nationally recognized and highly respected attorney, specializing in business and commercial litigation, employment, healthcare, and real estate. He successfully represents clients ranging from large Fortune 500 companies, to governmental entities, hospitals and private medical practices, medium and small businesses, as well as individuals.

Prior to co-founding Grant Austin, LLC, he founded Grant law, LLC, co-founded Grant Schumann, LLC, and established the Law Offices of Maurice Grant. Earlier in his career, after serving as a judicial law clerk for Justice Calvin C. Campbell of the Illinois Appellate Court, Maurice worked as an associate attorney representing clients in commercial, real estate, and employment litigation at the law firm now known as Much, Shelist, P.C.

During his career, Maurice has served the legal community both as a member of the Board of Managers and as Chair of the Solo and Small Firm Committee of the Chicago Bar Association. He currently serves on the CBA’s Finance Committee and as the association’s Pro Bono General Counsel.

Education

Maurice graduated from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 1984. Prior to attending law school, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from DePaul University and attended graduate school, majoring in European and African History.

Representative Matters

  • Represented a Fortune 30 bank in the dismissal of a proposed class action claim concerning overdraft fees in federal court.

  • Represent a Fortune 20 bank for several real estate litigation matters including lien rights, title, creditor rights, and other related legal issues.

  • Represented a former owner of a limited liability company established to process poultry for export to China. When the business was sold, the former owners could not agree on how to distribute the sale proceeds, which exceeded $4 million dollars. The claims in the case include breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, and fraud. On the eve of the trial, we reached a settlement that was favorable to our client.

  • Represented a health insurer and Medicaid managed-care company against a $3 million dollar breach of contract claim filed by a vendor that contracted to provide care coordination for the client’s members with various behavioral health providers. After a three-day arbitration hearing, we prevailed on all but one of the claims made by the vendor.
